David Hockey phone drawing

"People from the village," he says, craning back over that shoulder, "come up to me and tease me, 'We hear you've started drawing on your telephone.' And I tell them, 'Well, no, actually, it's just that occasionally I speak on my sketch pad.'"

from NYR of books
Fascinated by yet another new (and virtually diametrically opposite) technology, David Hockey is pursuing with almost as much verve and fascination as painting: drawing on his iPhone.

'It's always there in my pocket, there's no thrashing about, scrambling for the right color. One can set to work immediately, there's this wonderful impromptu quality, this freshness, to the activity; and when it's over, best of all, there's no mess, no clean-up. You just turn off the machine. Or, even better, you hit Send, and your little cohort of friends around the world gets to experience a similar immediacy. There's something, finally, very intimate about the whole process.'

ocean baths

I spent the weekend at the beach - hanging around in these ocean baths as the surf was very rough. I love the blue outline of the bath and the lane markings, its almost iridescent. When the waves crash into the baths, the pool is filled with young kids jumping into the foam, very jovial. I love how the beach is such a communal place!

my very rough advent calender

The kids were going crazy so we made a Christmas advent calender - it is rather rough and ready but the kids seem happy with it. Might need to practice it again for next year - maybe a collage one next year with some fresh colours. I love these paper collage ornaments by Essimar, beautiful colours.
